How Paediatric Dosing Ranges Work
Paediatric doses are often prescribed using weight-based dosing (mg/kg). If a guideline gives a dosing range (for example, 10–15 mg/kg/day), you multiply the child’s weight (kg) by the low and high values to get a safe dosing range.
Some guidelines are written as mg/kg/day (total daily dose split across doses), while others are mg/kg/dose. Always follow the wording of the reference you’re using.

Worked Examples
Example 1: Weight 12 kg, dose range 10–15 mg/kg/day. What is the daily dose range?
High: 12 × 15 = 180 mg/day
Example 2: Same patient (12 kg), 10–15 mg/kg/day in 3 divided doses (TDS). What is mg per dose?
Per dose: 120 ÷ 3 = 40 mg/dose, 180 ÷ 3 = 60 mg/dose
Clinical safety note: This tool supports calculation only. Always confirm whether the reference is mg/kg/day or mg/kg/dose, and check maximum daily doses, renal/hepatic adjustments, and local paediatric guidelines.
