Calculator

Optimize a combination of strengths to hit a target dose

How it works

Enter a target dose (mg) and up to three available tablet strengths (mg per tablet). The calculator searches combinations and chooses the best match using simple rules (closest dose, then fewer tablets).

This is useful when multiple strengths exist and you want to reduce pill burden without changing the intended dose.

Method

Achieved dose (mg) = (n1 × s1) + (n2 × s2) + (n3 × s3)
Difference = Target − Achieved (remainder or “over by”)

Worked examples

Example 1: Target 750 mg; strengths 500 mg and 250 mg

1 × 500 mg + 1 × 250 mg = 750 mg (2 tablets)

Example 2: Target 1400 mg; strengths 500, 250, 100

2 × 500 mg + 1 × 250 mg + 1 × 100 mg = 1350 mg (remainder 50 mg)

If remainder is clinically significant, consider a different strength, scored fraction (if allowed), or liquid.
