  • identify the dose the patient needs, the medicine strength and the answer unit
  • explain why mg and mL cannot be connected without a medicine strength
  • make the two dose units match before calculating
  • use prescribed dose ÷ medicine amount available × available volume to calculate the volume in mL
  • read a strength written mg/mL as mg in each 1 mL
  • separate the calculated volume from any medicine- and device-specific measurement or rounding decision

Clinical connection

Why this matters

A common mistake is to treat mg and mL as if they can convert directly. They cannot. You need the medicine strength, and you need to keep the dose and volume on that strength together.
