Clinical chemistry

Leslie Chalmers was a clinical chemistry researcher at the William Pepper Laboratory, Division of Chemistry, Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Chalmers co-authored the 1975 Clinical Chemistry paper with William V. Dorwart that compared 13 approaches to calculated serum osmolality and evaluated how closely calculated values agreed with measured osmolality.

William V. Dorwart

Clinical chemistry

William V. Dorwart was a clinical chemistry researcher at the William Pepper Laboratory, Division of Chemistry, Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. With Leslie Chalmers, he published a 1975 Clinical Chemistry study comparing multiple methods for calculating serum osmolality from measured chemical concentrations. The study analysed 715 hospital-patient serum samples and proposed an equation that closely matched measured osmolality.

Michael Emmett, MD, MACP, is a nephrologist and medical educator whose work has focused on acid-base disorders, fluid and electrolyte physiology, mineral metabolism and kidney disease. He is Chief of Internal Medicine Emeritus at Baylor University Medical Center. In 1977, with Robert G. Narins, he published the influential review “Clinical use of the anion gap,” which helped establish the anion gap as a practical framework for evaluating acid-base disorders; the paper did not invent the underlying arithmetic.

Paediatric nephrology

Chester M. Edelmann Jr., MD (1930–2013), was a leading figure in paediatric nephrology and served at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, where he became Senior Associate Dean and a distinguished professor of pediatrics. His work helped define the developing field of kidney disease and renal physiology in children. With Adrian Spitzer, he co-authored the 1969 review “The maturing kidney,” an important early synthesis of developmental renal physiology.

Purssell, MD, FRCPC, ABEM, FACMT, is a Professor in the University of British Columbia Department of Emergency Medicine and has served as a medical lead of the BC Drug and Poison Information Centre. In 2001, Purssell and colleagues prospectively derived and validated an empirical relationship for ethanol's contribution to the osmolal gap: ethanol in mg/dL divided by 3.7, or approximately 1.25 times ethanol in mmol/L. Adrian Spitzer

Paediatric and developmental nephrology

Adrian Spitzer, MD (1927–2021), was a paediatric nephrologist and a past president of the American Society of Pediatric Nephrology. Originally from Bucharest, he became a major contributor to developmental nephrology and worked at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore. With Chester M. Edelmann Jr., he co-authored the 1969 review “The maturing kidney,” and his later career continued to focus on how renal physiology changes during growth and development.
