Overview

James J. Figge, MD, MBA, is an endocrinologist and acid-base researcher whose work has examined the quantitative role of albumin and other weak acids in human acid-base physiology. He was first author of the 1998 Critical Care Medicine study ‘Anion gap and hypoalbuminemia,’ which quantified how changes in albumin alter the observed anion gap and derived a 2.5 mEq/L per 1 g/dL albumin adjustment relationship. This work concerns albumin adjustment of the anion gap; it did not invent the standard sodium-minus-chloride-and-bicarbonate arithmetic.

This paper quantified how abnormal albumin changes the observed anion gap and derived the 0.25 mEq/L per g/L (2.5 mEq/L per g/dL) adjustment relationship. It should not be described as the invention of standard anion-gap arithmetic.
