Overview

Donald W. Cockcroft, MD, FRCPC, is a Canadian physician and Professor in the Division of Respirology, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan. Much of his later research has focused on asthma, airway responsiveness and bronchial challenge testing. In 1976, with M. Henry Gault, he published the study that produced the Cockcroft-Gault equation for estimating creatinine clearance from serum creatinine and patient characteristics.

Cockcroft-Gault Equation

Formula originally described by Donald W. Cockcroft.

Used for: Adults with stable kidney function when Cockcroft-Gault estimated creatinine clearance is the method required by the relevant medicine source; the original derivation studied adult males aged 18 to 92 years

The PubMed abstract reports derivation from age and 24-hour creatinine excretion/kg in 249 adult male patients aged 18–92 years, with predicted values compared against the mean of two measured 24-hour creatinine clearances in 236 patients; the paper specifies a 15% lower estimate for females.
