Learning outcomes
What you will learn
- check that the final answer uses the unit the question asked for
- compare the important numbers in the calculation with the original question or label
- check whether units needed to be matched before calculating
- use simple bigger/smaller relationships to notice suspicious results
- check supplied ranges, maximums and missing information separately
- work backwards to support the arithmetic relationship without treating the reverse check as proof that the source values were correct
Clinical connection
Why this matters
A calculation can go wrong even when the arithmetic looks neat. The wrong number may have been copied, a unit may not have been converted, a decimal may be in the wrong place, or an important value may be missing.
