Quick review before you start
To calculate gtt/min, multiply the volume in mL by the labelled administration-set drop factor in gtt/mL, then divide by the infusion time in minutes. The drop factor comes from the exact tubing set and must not be guessed.
Formula
gtt/min = (volume mL × drop factor gtt/mL) ÷ time min
Keep time in minutes for gtt/min. If the answer must be a countable drop rate, apply the stated rounding rule only to the final result.
Sample question
500 mL is to infuse over 4 hours using tubing labelled 15 gtt/mL. What is the calculated drip rate?
(500 × 15) ÷ 240 = 31.25 gtt/min
Answer: 31 gtt/min when a whole-drop answer is required
