Identify it
Foundation
Recognise the lesson’s key idea, the values that belong in the calculation and the unit the answer needs.
Practice arithmetic only. Use the current authorised kilogram weight basis supplied for the exercise. 100-50-20 mL/kg/day is the daily Holliday–Segar maintenance method; 4-2-1 mL/kg/hr is a simplified rounded hourly shortcut based on it, so hourly ×24 does not have to equal the daily result. A full-maintenance formula result does not decide whether IV therapy is needed, choose fluid composition, create a universal restriction percentage or large-child cap, replace deficits or ongoing losses, provide resuscitation, set monitoring, or define pump precision. This MedMaths pathway is scoped to 28 days to 18 years, while neonates and important condition-specific populations need separate guidance.
Identify it
Recognise the lesson’s key idea, the values that belong in the calculation and the unit the answer needs.
Calculate it
Use clearly stated orders and supplied information to complete straightforward calculations.
Interpret it
Handle frequency, totals, conversions, order changes and realistic but relevant detail.
Reason through it
Reason through dense ward stories, changed orders, competing numbers and multi-part calculation chains.
