Lesson overview
Dimensional Analysis for Dosage Calculations
Ready when you are
Start with short teaching slides, then answer the lesson questions. Your progress stays on this browser.
Learning outcomes
What you will learn
- Identify the unit the final answer needs.
- Choose equivalent conversion factors.
- Orient factors so unwanted units cancel.
- Calculate while carrying units through the chain.
Clinical connection
Why this matters
Dimensional analysis keeps units inside the calculation. That makes the setup itself a check: when the unwanted units cancel correctly, the remaining unit should be the one the question asks for.
Quick concept
How dimensional analysis works in dosage calculations
Start with the supplied quantity, identify the unit the answer needs, then multiply by equivalent conversion factors arranged so unwanted units cancel and the target unit remains.
Formula
starting quantity × conversion factor(s) = target quantity
Worked example
Educational example: order 500 mg; available 250 mg in 5 mL.
500 mg × 5 mL / 250 mg
Answer: 10 mL
Correct unit cancellation checks the mathematical setup; it does not independently verify that a medication order or administration plan is clinically appropriate.
