  • Explain the difference between mL/hr, mg/hr and mg/min in plain English.
  • Find or use a concentration in mg/mL.
  • Calculate mg/hr from mg/mL and a matching current mL/hr value.
  • Convert mg/hr to mg/min and mg/min to mg/hr.
  • Confirm the concentration and mL/hr belong to the same current infusion state, and stop if required values conflict or are unclear.
  • Keep medication dose-rate units separate from volumetric infusion-rate fields on an infusion pump.
  • Keep a medication rate separate from a total medication amount in mg.

Clinical connection

Why this matters

mL/hr, mg/hr and mg/min can appear in the same question. Keeping the unit beside every number makes it much harder to mistake the pump's fluid rate for the medication rate.
