Medication Units & units/mL Calculations
Calculate mL and mL/hr from fictional units-based orders while keeping product-specific medication units, current concentration, dosing weight, device instructions and clinical rounding as separate pieces of information.

What you will learn
- explain that a medication unit is product or standard specific rather than a universal mg or mL value
- write units clearly and recognise why U, u and IU are unsafe medication-dose abbreviations
- read total units, total labelled volume and units/mL as different quantities
- calculate mL from a dose in units and calculate units from a known mL volume
- calculate mL/hr from a units/hr order and reverse-check the medication rate represented by mL/hr
- use the authorised/current order and exact current preparation from the same calculation state
- calculate a units/kg/hr order in two stages using only the verified dosing weight: units/hr first, then mL/hr
- keep insulin product/device instructions and final clinical measurement or rounding decisions outside generic arithmetic
Clinical connection
Why this matters
A medication unit is not a universal mass or volume. Dose in units, concentration in units/mL, calculated volume, device markings and clinical rounding are different layers. Keeping them separate reduces unit, concentration and device-selection errors.
